WHARTON STATE FOREST
LOCATION - The park is accessible from the Atlantic City Expressway, Garden State Parkway, and U.S. 30 and U.S. 206.
ACTIVITIES - Camping is available year-round with 50 campsites and a dump station at Atsion and 49 sites at Godfrey Bridge. Seven more primitive areas have over 1,000 sites. These include Buttonwood Hill, Bodine Field, Hawkins Bridge, Batona Campsite, Mullica River Wilderness, Lower Forge, and Goshen Pond. Three campgrounds permit horses in the campsites.
Nine cabins are located on the north shore of Atsion Lake. Atsion has a guarded swimming area.
Almost 500 miles of sand roads are open year-round for hiking and horseback riding. The 50-mile Batona Trail passes through here. Mountain bicyclists cycle along 20 miles of forest trails.
Four rivers, including the Mullica, Batsto, West Branch of the Wading, and Oswego, offer excellent canoeing. Canoes may be rented at Atsion and motorized boats may be launched at Crowley Landing on the Mullica River. Boats are restricted to electric-powered boats under 10 horsepower. The park has four major canoe trails.
Tour Batsto Village, site of a former bog iron and glassmaking industrial center. Guided tours of the mansion depart daily from 10:00-3:30. Stagecoach tours go from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Interpretive programs are offered 9:00-4:30 Thursday-Sunday. For information, call 609-561-3262.
