WALDEN POND STATE RESERVATION
LOCATION - The pond is in the greater Boston area. Follow Massachusetts 2 and then Massachusetts 126 south and follow signs.
FEATURES - Walden Pond is a National Register Historic and Literary Landmark. Over a half-million people visit here annually.
ACTIVITIES - Once the park's limit of 1,000 people is reached, it is closed with a reopening time posted at entry points to the park. Parking is restricted to the lot off Massachusetts 126.
Come to go swimming with lifeguards on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Swimming across the pond is prohibited. Visitors can also go canoeing, rowing, picnicking, hiking, and fishing. Park interpreters offer guided walks and educational programs year-round. They also staff a replica of Thoreau's house where he lived from 1845-47.
While in Concord, visit Minute Man National Historical Park on Battle Road, Massachusetts 2A. Tour Battle Road Visitor Center and North Bridge Visitor Center. Walk over the North Bridge west of Monument Street. Continue another mile east of town to tour the Wayside on Friday-Tuesday from mid-April through October.
Other historical homes to visit include Old Manse on Monument Street, Orchard House on Lexington Road, and Thoreau Lyceum at 156 Belknap Street.
