Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site
In southeastern New York, in Hyde Park
Once the country home of Frederick W. Vanderbilt, a grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt who amassed the family fortune, the Vanderbilt Mansion is a magnificent example of the great estates built by wealthy financial and industrial leaders between 1880 and 1900. The site was designated on December 18, 1940.
WHAT TO SEE & DO
Taking guided tours of home, taking self-guided tours of formal garden and grounds. Facilities: Visitor center, furnished home of Frederick Vanderbilt, grounds and gardens, trails. Bookstore, gift shop. Programs & Events: Ranger-led mansion tours, talks on lifestyle of the Vanderbilts and their contemporaries, industrial expansion, turn-of-the-20th-cen-tury technology, and landscape architecture. Tips & Hints: Allow one to two hours to see house and grounds and four to eight hours to fully explore the house, grounds, and trails. Busiest June-Aug., least crowded Jan. and Feb.

FEES & HOURS
Entrance fee: $8 adults, free ages 16 and under; $22 for combination pass to FDR site and either Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site (see separate listing) or Top Cottage tour (see Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site). Site open daily 9-5; grounds open daily 7 AM-sunset.
HOW TO GET THERE
Two hours north of New York City on the east bank of the Hudson River on U.S. 9, 8 mi north of Poughkeepsie. Closest airport: New-burgh (45 mi).
