LOCATION - From Essex Junction, go east 9 miles on Vermont 15 and east 4 miles on paved Town Road, then another 4 miles on a gravel road with a steep grade. No trailers are recommended.


FEATURES - Underhill State Park is located on the western slope of 4,300-foot Mount Mansfield and is part of Mount Mansfield State Forest.


ACTIVITIES - The upper campground has 9 group lean-to sites. The lower campground has 11 tent and 6 lean-to campsites available from mid-May through Columbus Day. The park is not recommended for RV or tent-trailer campers, since campers are required to park in the lot and not at the campsite.


Hike one of four trails ascending 4,393-foot Mount Mansfield's western flank. Sunset Ridge Trail involves a 3-mile climb to the summit. Vermont's Long Trail traverses the summit ridge and, when combined with trails from the other side of the mountain, provides options for hiking loops. Pick up a trail map at the ranger station.


Drive up the privately operated auto road to the mountain summit. The state forest has 38 campsites in Smugglers Notch, hiking trails, fishing, swimming, and boating. Drive up the toll road to the summit of Mount Mansfield. It begins 5 miles northwest of Stowe from Vermont 108.


Bicyclists and hikers can enjoy Stowe's 5-mile recreational path that begins in the center of town and follows a stream north towards Mount Mansfield. Take a ride to the mountain summit on the Stowe Gondola located 7.5 miles west of Stowe on Vermont 108. For information, call 802-253-7311.
