Prince William Forest Park
In northeastern Virginia, near Triangle
The 18,572-acre park contains the largest example of an eastern piedmont forest in the National Park System and is a sanctuary for native plants and animals in a rapidly developing region. The park encompasses the Quantico Creek watershed and a heritage of land usage that includes Colonial tobacco production, subsistence farming, iron pyrite mining, the Civilian Conservation Corps, and a World War II U.S. Army spy-training base. Congress created the Chopawamsic Recreational Demonstration Area in 1933. It was transferred to the Park Service in 1936 and renamed in 1948.
WHAT TO SEE & DO
Bird- and wildlife watching, fishing, hiking, on- and off-road biking, picnicking. Facilities: Visitor center, 11-mi scenic drive, 3-mi paved bike trail, 18 mi of fire roads for mountain biking, 35 mi of hiking trails. Map sale area. Programs & Events: Ranger-led tours and talks (weekends). Tips & Hints: Busiest May and June, least crowded Nov. and Jan.

FEES, HOURS & REGULATIONS
Entrance fee: $5 per vehicle or $3 per bicyclist or walk-in. Backcountry permit (free) required for all backcountry camping. Park open daily dawn-dusk. Registered campers and cabin campers have access 24 hours. Visitor center open daily 8:30-5.
HOW TO GET THERE
32 mi south of Washington, DC, and 20 mi north of Fredericksburg, VA, via I-95 and Exit 150 (Rte. 619) west. Closest airports: Reagan, Dulles.
