LOCATION - Follow Maine 209 south for 14 miles from Bath to Phippsburg and then follow park signs.
FEATURES - Popham Beach is considered to be among the top ten beaches in the Northeast.
ACTIVITIES - Take a coastal hike and climb Morse Mountain. Get views of an estuary, Seguin, Fox, and Heron islands, and Mount Washington in New Hampshire. Enjoy a picnic, go deep sea and shore fishing, or swimming in the ocean.
On Wednesday evenings during July, attend outdoor family concerts on the Brunswick Town mall. Maine State Music Theater presents musicals in Pickard Theater on Bowdoin College campus in Brunswick from mid-June through late August. For details, call 207-725-8769. Harriet Beecher Stowe's house, where the author wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin, is nearby. Thomas Point Beach hosts an annual Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival over Labor Day weekend.
Between 1862-92, Bath was the nation's fifth largest seaport and almost half of the United States' wooden sailing vessels were built here. Stroll through the Maine Maritime Museum at 243 Washington, along the banks of the Kennebec, to learn more about the area's shipbuilding. For information, call 207-443-1316. Fort Popham is 15 miles from Bath on Maine 209. It was begun in 1861 for use during the Civil War, but never completed. Climb the circular staircase in the unfinished granite fortification to the towers. From the fort, you can see Seguin Island and Lighthouse. The lighthouse was erected in 1795 and is Maine's second oldest. Squirrel Point Lighthouse is visible across the Kennebec River off Maine 209 at Phippsburg.
Take a walking tour of historic Wiscasset. A scenic tourist train leaves Wiscasset daily in the summer. Stroll through Sunken Garden on Main Street. On the banks of the Sheepscot you can see two decaying, four-masted schooners beached here in 1932.
Incoming pilots can land at Wiscasset Airport, located 3 miles southwest of town. Rental cars are available.
