LONG POINT ON LAKE CHAUTAUQUA STATE PARK
LOCATION - Long Point is along a peninsula on the eastern shore of Lake Chautauqua, off New York 430 near Bemus Point.
FEATURES - Long Point was formed by retreating glaciers and extends into the lake where the water is deepest. Lake Chautauqua, 18 miles long and 1,308 feet above sea level, is one of the most navigable bodies of water in the U.S.
ACTIVITIES - Open for day-use only, visitors enjoy hiking its wooded trails, swimming from the guarded beach, and boating from the marina. Chautauqua Lake is noted for its muskellunge, muskie, and walleye fishing. A walleye contest runs from mid-May through mid-June. Charter services are available.
Chautauqua Institute is on the west side of the lake and is considered one of the United States' leading summer cultural centers. Chautauqua is listed as a National Historic Landmark and is accessible via 1-90 at the Westfield exit and then by following New York 394 south.
The Chautauqua Institute was founded here in 1876 and is one of five still active in the U.S. In its heyday, over 300 independent Chautauquas were open.
Admission is charged to tour the spacious grounds with its many historic Victorian homes and beautiful gardens. Tickets are sold for day tours, and if purchased in the evening, permit you to attend a concert in the amphitheater. For information, call 716-357-6250. Golfers can play on Chautauqua Golf Club's 27-hole public course. Come to play tennis, go jogging and biking, and swimming from 4 beaches. Go fishing, water-skiing, and boating on the lake.
