LOCATION - The park is 8 miles southeast of Ellsworth on Maine 184 on Frenchman's Bay.


FEATURES - The park has frontage along Frenchman Bay providing stunning views of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park.


ACTIVITIES - Go camping in one of 61 campsites and fishing, boating, and swimming in the bay.


Visit Acadia National Park, located on the Schoodic Peninsula on Mount Desert Island, which is accessible via Maine 186. Take Park Loop Road, a 20-mile scenic drive that takes you past the park's lakes, seashore, and to the summit of 1,530-foot Cadillac Mountain.


Hikers have access to over 120 miles of hiking trails or 50 miles of graded carriage roads shared with equestrians. Tour the visitor center or camp in one of the campgrounds. Go swimming from Sand Beach. For park information, call 207-288-3338.


Take a boat cruise from Bar Harbor. To go on a whale watching trip, call 207-288-9776. Cruise to Nova Scotia aboard the M/V Bluenose. For information, call 1-800-432-7344 in Maine or 1-800-341-7981 outside Maine. Working lobster boat excursions are also available from the harbor.


Attend Bar Harbor Music Festival held in July and August. Tour Jackson Laboratory, IV2 miles south of Bar Harbor on Maine 3. The nationally known cancer research institute offers a lecture and audiovisual presentation from mid-June through late August. For details, call 207-288-3371. Go soaring over the area from the Bar Harbor/Trenton Airport.


Winter Harbor on Schoodic Point hosts an annual lobster festival the second weekend in August. Prospect Harbor Light, built in 1891, is nearby.


In Ellsworth, tour the Black House located on West Main off U.S. 1. It was constructed in the 1820s and was occupied by the Black family for three generations. Its carriage house has nineteenth-century carriages and sleighs. For information, call 207-667-8671.


You can also tour the Stanwood Homestead Museum and Birdsacre Sanctuary located in Ellsworth, south of Maine 3 and U.S. 1. The homestead was constructed in 1850 and the sanctuary's 100 acres has nature trails to explore. For information, call 207-667-8460.


The Franciscan Monastery, located off Maine 9, has beautifully landscaped grounds and a woodland walk down to the river. It's open daily from sunrise to sunset.
