LAKE ERIE STATE PARK
LOCATION - The park is on the eastern shoreline of Lake Erie 2 miles north of Brockton on New York 380. It's also 7 miles west of Dunkirk on New York 5.
ACTIVITIES - Lake Erie has a 95-site campground, 6 sites with water, 44 with electrical hookups, and a dumping station. You can also stay in one of 10 cabins. Enjoy fishing in Lake Erie for trout, record-size walleye, bass, and salmon. Go swimming, hiking, and bicycling.
Go boating from the park or public boat-launch facilities at Westfield and Dunkirk.
An Artist-in-Residence from Allegany State Park brings music programs and storytelling to the park once a week.
During the winter, go snowmobiling and cross-country skiing with rentals available.
Dunkirk Historical Lighthouse, circa 1875, and Veterans' Park Museum is off New York 5 on Lighthouse Point Drive North. Lighthouse tours are offered from June-August from 10:00-4:00, and from September-November from 10:00-3:00 except on Sunday and Wednesday. For information, call 716-366-5050. Anglers fish in Dunkirk Harbor.
Chautauqua Institution, a National Historic Landmark, is located halfway between Buffalo and Erie and offers summertime entertainment. For details, call 1-800-836-ARTS. Play on the 27-hole golf course. Go jogging and bicycling. Enjoy boating, swimming, and fishing in Chautauqua Lake for bass, muskellunge, and walleye. Several fishing derbies are held each year.
Take a steamboat excursion from Mayville aboard the Chautauqua Belle from May-September. For reservations, call 716-753-2403.
Incoming pilots can land at Chautauqua County Dunkirk Airport 3 miles east of Dunkirk. Rental cars are available.
