LOCATION - To reach Kill Rare State Park from St. Albans Bay, go 4.5 miles west on Vermont 36, then 3 miles southwest on Point Road. The park is surrounded on three sides by Lake Champlain.
To reach Burton Island State Park, go to Kill Kare State Park and take the passenger ferry from the tip of Hathway Point to Burton Island or go by private boat. No vehicles are permitted on the island. The ferry runs from 8:30 am until 6:30 pm at 2-hour intervals.
Woods Island State Park is in Lake Champlain, 4 miles north of Burton Island. Access is by private boat only. No ferry service is available.
ACTIVITIES - At Kill Kare go swimming, fishing, sailboarding, or launch your cartop boat into Lake Champlain. Rental rowboats are available. Changing facilities are located in the old hotel where you can see historic photographs of Kill Kare. Enjoy a picnic and purchase a snack at the snack bar.
On Burton Island, camp in one of 44 campsites, including 22 lean-tos. The 100-slip marina has power hookups. Go fishing or boating from the ramp on Lake Champlain with rentals available. The park has 3 miles of shoreline. Hike island trails, including North Shore Trail, Champlain Trail, and Eagle Bay Trail. Tour the nature center and attend naturalist programs. Snacks are available at the snack bar. The park is open mid-May through Labor Day.
On Woods Island, camp in one of five primitive campsites. Obtain your reservation and camping permit through Burton Island State Park. No fires are permitted. Hike the island's perimeter trail. Go fishing and boating in Lake Champlain.
In early April, attend the Vermont Maple Festival held in St. Albans.
