MONTAUK POINT STATE PARK
LOCATION - Hither Hills is 8 miles west of Montauk on New York 27.
Montauk Point State Park is east of Hither Hills, 4 miles east of Montauk, on the south shore of eastern Long Island.
FEATURES - Montauk, named by the Indians, means "hilly country." The area holds 30 world fishing records registered in the 1980 International Game Fish Association Record Book.
ACTIVITIES - Hither Hills has 7 campsites, a trailer dump, and a food store. Go hiking and visit the walking dunes. Cycle the bicycling trails, go swimming, and play tennis or golf. Charter a boat from June-October and go saltwater fishing from June-October for tuna, marlin, shark, and swordfish. Surf cast for bluefish, blackfish, cod, flounder, and bass from April-November with some of the best catches made late in the fall.
Montauk Point also has hiking, an Indian cemetery, and fishing in both the Atlantic Ocean or Lake Montauk.
Take the ferry from Montauk to Block Island, Rhode Island, where you can enjoy a picnic, go fishing, and swimming at Block Island State Recreation Area.
Visit the Montauk Point Lighthouse and museum located at the end of Montauk Highway. The lighthouse was commissioned by President George Washington in the 1790s and is the fourth oldest active lighthouse.
Incoming pilots can land at Montauk Airport, 3 miles northeast of Montauk in Montauk Point State Park. Rental cars are available.
