HADDAM MEADOWS STATE PARK
LOCATION - The park is east of Connecticut 9 in Haddam.
ACTIVITIES - Haddam Meadows is in the river floodplain and is an excellent spot for field sports, picnicking, boating, fishing, and cross-country skiing in the winter.
Cockaponset State Forest, the state's second largest state forest, is nearby on Connecticut 148. Here visitors can go camping in one of 16 campsites, picnicking, fishing, swimming, and hiking the various forest trails. During the winter, go cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
Launch your boats into Pataconk Reservoir, 3 miles north of Connecticut 148 on Cedar Lake Road. No internal combustion engines may be used in July and August. Access is limited to carry-in boats.
Attend the Quinnehtukqut Rendezvous and Native American Festival at Haddam Meadows in August. It features native celebrations, including wigwam and teepee villages, black power and hawk/knife contests, storytelling, and drum competition.
Tour the Thankful Arnold House, circa 1794-1810. It's on Connecticut 154, from Higganum. From Connecticut 9, take Exit 7. See its eighteenth- and nineteenth-century furnishings and colonial herb and vegetable gardens. It's open Memorial Day through Labor Day on Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00-4:00 or by appointment. Visit Connecticut Yankee Information and Science Center on Injun Hollow Road in Haddam Neck, off Connecticut 151. The center is on the grounds of a nuclear power plant and has hands-on exhibits, a self-guided nature trail, picnic area, and boat dock. For details, call 203-267-9269.
The Sundial Herb Garden is on Hidden Lake Road at Higganum off Connecticut 81, on Brault Hill Road. It has both a seventeenth-century formal garden and eighteenth-century garden and tea room. Guided tour "Tea Talks" are offered Sundays. Reservations are required. For information, call 203-345-4290.
