LOCATION - Devil's Hopyard State Park is 5 miles south of Colchester and 3 miles north from the intersection of Connecticut 82 and 156. It's also 3 miles north of North Plain.
Gillette Castle State Park is on 67 River Road off Connecticut 431 at Hadlyme. If you arrive from the west, take the Chester-Hadlyme ferry.
Selden Neck State Park is on an island located near Gillette Castle and is accessible only by water.
FEATURES - Devil's Hopyard is considered to be hallowed ground by the superstitious. Early folklore held that the Devil had a "great eye for wild and rugged scenery," like that found in the hopyard. Another tale tells of the Devil hopping from ledge to ledge in order not to get wet, and the holes left behind were the result of his hot hoofs.
Chapman Falls, located on Eight Mile River, drop 60 feet over a series of steps.
Gillette Castle was patterned after a Rhine fortress and was constructed in 1914.
ACTIVITIES - At Devil's Hopyard, camp in the 27-site campground near the falls from mid-April through the end of September. Go trout fishing in the stream and hike along 15 miles of trails. Boat rentals are available in East Haddam.
Gillette Castle State Park features a 24-room hilltop fieldstone mansion built in 1919 by actor William Gillette, who was known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. The castle is open daily Memorial Day through Columbus Day, and weekends Columbus Day through the last weekend before Christmas. The grounds are open year-round. Enjoy a picnic and go fishing and hiking. Food concessions are available. Rent canoes from North American Canoe Lines at Hadlyme below the castle and go canoe camping.
At Selden Neck State Park you can go canoe camping from May-September.
In East Haddam, attend the Great Connecticut Traditional Jazz Festival in August. Tour Amasa Day House on Moodus Green, Connecticut 151. From Connecticut 2, take Exit 16. The house, built in 1816, was lived in by three generations of the Day family. See period furnishings and family heirlooms. Tour historic Johnsonville onjohnsonville Road, an historic nineteenth-century mill village. Tours are offered from late May through Labor Day weekend. See their exhibit with 50 miniature rooms and a carriage collection. For information, call 203-873-1987.
Nathan Hale School House on Main Street, Connecticut 149, is at the rear of St. Stephen's Church. This one-room school is where patriot Nathan Hale taught from 1773-74. It's open Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends and holidays from 2:00-4:00. For information, call 203-873-9547.

For an hour-long round trip via vintage steam train from Essex to Chester, contact the Connecticut Valley Railroad. Its train connects with an optional riverboat cruise at Deep River returning you to Essex. The railroad is reached via Exit 3 from Connecticut 9 onto Railroad Avenue.
