George Washington Memorial Parkway
In northeastern Virginia, near McLean
Natural scenery along the Potomac River, across the water from Washington, DC, is preserved along this parkway. It connects the historic sites from Mount Vernon, where Washington lived, past the nation's capital, which he founded, to the Great Falls of the Potomac, where the president demonstrated his skill as an engineer. The parkway was authorized in 1930 and transferred to the Park Service in 1933.
WHAT TO SEE & DO
Bicycling, hiking, scenic driving, touring sites. Facilities: The 7,200-acre parkway includes 15 sites: Arlington House; Clara Barton National Historic Site; Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove on the Potomac, and Theodore Roosevelt Island (see separate entries for all four); the Arlington Memorial Bridge; Claude Moore Farm; Dyke Marsh; Fort Hunt Park; Fort Marcy; Glen Echo Park; Great Falls Park; Netherlands Carillon; Turkey Run Park; U.S. Marine Corps Memorial (Iwo Jima); and the Women in Military Service to America Memorial—and trails. Boat ramps, marinas, picnic areas. Programs & Events: Interpretive programs, guided walks, concerts, children's camps, marathons. Sunset Parade (U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, Memorial Day-Aug., Tues. evenings). Tips & Hints: Busiest June and July, least crowded Jan. and Feb.
FEES, HOURS & REGULATIONS
Reservations required for many interpretive programs offered at sites that are not regularly staffed. Permit required for group picnicking at Fort Hunt Park Thurs.-Sun. and holidays Apr.-Oct. Permit required to consume alcohol. No weapons.
HOW TO GET THERE
The parkway runs parallel to the Potomac River north and south of Washington, DC, and is accessible from all major travel routes from the south and west, including 1-495, 1-95, and 1-66. Closest airport: Reagan.
