FORT DUMMER STATE PARK
LOCATION - The fort is south of Brattleboro. Take Exit 1 from 1-91. Go V10 mile north on U.S. 5, then Vi mile east on Fairground Road. Continue south one mile on Main Street, Old Guilford Road.
FEATURES - Fort Dummer in the Connecticut River Valley was established in 1724 and was Vermont's first permanent European settlement.
ACTIVITIES - Camp in one of the 61 gravel campsites, including 10 lean-tos and a trailer dump station, from mid-May through Labor Day. Hike two hiking trails and enjoy a picnic.
In Brattleboro, tour Brattleboro Museum and Art Center, located off 1-91. Follow Vermont 5 to Main and Vernon. The museum's five galleries are in the former Union Railroad Station. For information, call 802-257-0124.
Visit Basketville, 5 miles from the park in Putney, with its extensive collection of baskets and wicker furniture. For information, call 802-387-5509.
Bellows Falls, 22 miles from the park, offers a scenic train ride aboard the Green Mountain Flyer. Take a 26-mile excursion in a restored coach pulled by vintage diesels. You'll see Brockways Mills Gorge and two covered bridges. For information, call 802-463-3069.
