FALL RIVER HERITAGE STATE PARK
LOCATION - The park is off 1-195, Exit 5, at 200 Davol Street in Fall River. It's next to Battleship Cove. To reach the park from Massachusetts 75 South, take the Davol Street Exit.
FEATURES - At its peak, Fall River's mills produced more cloth than any other city in the world.
ACTIVITIES - The park is open year-round, but is closed Monday. Tour the visitor center to learn about Fall River's textile and nautical history and watch the multimedia presentation, "The Fabric of Fall River."
Walk the boardwalk along the waterfront where the Taunton and Quequechan rivers merge and take a guided tour of the old commercial district on Main Street. Climb to the top of the bell tower for an overlook of the skyline and harbor where the USS Massachusetts is moored.
In late August attend Fall River Celebrates America, featuring fireworks, boat races, concerts, and a parade.
Battleship Cove State Park at 70 Water Street has several twentieth-century vessels, including the battleship Massachusetts, a PT boat, destroyer, and submarine. Tour the Marine Museum. For information, call 508-678-1100.
Tour Old Colony and Fall River Railroad Museum at Battleship Cove, located on the corner of Central and Water streets. An annual train show is held the third weekend in January. For information, call 508-674-9340.
Fall River Historical Society offers tours of the historic mansion, circa 1843, at 451 Rock Street. Besides Victorian displays, you'll see exhibits from the famous Lizzie Borden ax-murder case. The mansion is closed Mondays, holidays, and January-February. For information, call 508-679-1071.
Take a ride on the Fall River Carousel at Battleship Cove, one of the few authentic merry-go-rounds left in the U.S.
