National Historical Park

In southeastern Virginia, near Williamsburg


The park includes most of Jamestown Island, the site of the first permanent British settlement in North America; Yorktown, the site of the last major battle of the American Revolution; and the 23-mi-long scenic Colonial Parkway that connects the two. Also included is the Cape Henry Memorial, which marks the approximate site of the first landing of Jamestown's colonists in 1607. The park was authorized as Colonial National Monument on July 3, 1930; proclaimed on December 30, 1930; and redesignated Colonial National Historical Park on June 5, 1936.

At York-town: Gov. Thomas Nelson House; Moore House, site of surrender negotiations; Surrender Field, interpretive pavilion at actual surrender site. Bookstore. Programs & Events: Ranger-guided tours. Living-history tours (Jamestown: daily), historical drama (Nelson House: mid-June-mid-Aug., daily). Lambs Artillery Firing Program (Yorktown: periodically Mar.-Sept.); Jamestown Weekend (mid-May); Memorial Day Weekend-Civil War Weekend (Yorktown: end of May); Independence Day Celebration (Yorktown: July 4); First Assembly Day Commemoration (Jamestown: late July); Yorktown Victory Celebration (Yorktown: Oct. 19). Tips & Hints: Allow two to three hours to visit each site. Go in winter to avoid crowds. Busiest July and Aug., least crowded Jan. and Feb.



Entrance fees: Jamestown, $6 adults; Yorktown, $5 adults; combination ticket, $9 adults. Jamestown open daily 8:30-dusk. Jamestown Visitor Center open daily 9-5. Grounds open daily dawn-dusk, last entry at 4:30. Yorktown Visitor Center open daily 9-5.



Off I-64, near Williamsburg, with sections in Jamestown and Yorktown and a parkway connecting the two. Closest airports: Newport News-Williamsburg (11 mi), Richmond (56 mi), Norfolk (37 mi).
