BUTTON BAY STATE PARK
LOCATION - To reach the park from Vergennes, go 1/2 mile south on Vermont 22A, then northwest for 6,5 miles on local roads.
FEATURES - Button Bay is on a bluff along Lake Champlain and was named for the button-like concretions formed by clay deposits found along the shoreline.
ACTIVITIES - Camp in one of 73 campsites, including 13 lean-tos and a disposal station, from mid-May through Columbus Day. The campground overlooks Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains. Go swimming in the guarded pool and fishing, sailing, and boating from the dock on Lake Champlain. Boat rentals are available. Hike marked nature trails through Button Point Natural Area's mature hardwood forest, explore the nature museum, attend naturalist programs, and enjoy a picnic.
Visit Morgan Horse Farm in Middlebury, 20 miles from the park. This world-famous home of Morgans offers daily guided tours from May 1-November 1 from 9:00-4:00. For information, call 802-388-2011.
In Shelburne, 7 miles south of Burlington and 20 miles from the park, tour Shelburne Museum and Heritage Park's 37 historic buildings to learn about early New England life. You'll see eighteenth- and nineteenth-century houses, a hand-crafted circus, and side-wheeler SS Ticonderoga. Electra Webb Memorial House features European furnishings and paintings.
