BEAVERTAIL STATE PARK
LOCATION - From Rhode Island 1 south, take Rhode Island 138 east to North Road. The park is on Beavertail Road in Jamestown.
ACTIVITIES - Visit the granite tower, north of the site for the original lighthouse erected in 1749. From this point, you get a spectacular vista of Rhode Island's Atlantic coastline. Naturalists are on duty from the end of June through the end of August and offer lectures and tours. For information, call 401-423-9920. Tour the Beavertail Lighthouse Museum located in the Assistant Keeper's House, open mid-June through Labor Day on Wednesday-Sunday from 9:00-5:00. For information, call 401-423-9941. Go fishing and hiking.
To see historic Jamestown Windmill, circa 1787, follow North Road off Rhode Island 138. Recently restored, it's open mid-June through September weekends from 1:00-4:00 and by appointment. Call 401-423-1798.
Drive up Prospect Hill off Beavertail Road to reach the island's second highest point and a Revolutionary earthworks battery.
