BEAR MOUNTAIN STATE PARK
LOCATION - Bear Mountain State Park is north of Danbury off Connecticut 37. It borders Lake Candlewood, the third largest man-made lake in the world, and is the largest one east of the Mississippi.
ACTIVITIES - At Bear Mountain, enjoy a picnic and go hiking and fishing in Lake Candlewood.
In Danbury, tour Charles Ives's Birthplace, 5 Mountainville Avenue. From 1-84, take Exit 2 or 4. This home of the Pulitzer Prize-winning father of modern music was built in 1790. Attend outdoor symphonies, jazz and folk concerts. Tours are given Wednesday and Thursday from 2:00-5:00 pm. For information, call 203-743-5200.
Stop by Meeker's Hardware Store on White Street to get a five-cent coke. It's the only hardware store listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Marcus Dairy on Sugar Hollow Road, Danbury, has a fifties Cruise Night most Saturdays for vintage cars and motorcycle rallies most Sundays. For information, call 203-748-9427.
The Military Museum of Southern New England at 125 Park Avenue, 1-84, Exit 3 in Danbury, has an extensive collection of anti-tank weapons and World War II military vehicles and artifacts. It's open May 1-September 30, Thursday-Sunday from 11:00-4:00, and October 1-April 30 by appointment only. Call 203-790-9277.
Attend summer noontime concerts at St. James Church, 25 West Street. It houses the Bulkley Memorial Carillon, the first made in the U.S.
The Danbury Scott-Fanton Museum at 43 Main Street, Exit 5 off 1-84, has eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century furnishings and Revolutionary War exhibits in the house, circa 1785. Additional Victorian homes are located on Deer Hill.
Play golf at the Richter Park Golf Course on Aunt Hack Road, Danbury. It's rated as one of the top ten public golf courses in the U.S. by Golf Digest. For a tee-off time, call 203-792-2550. During the winter, go cross-country skiing here.
The old jail and pre-Revolutionary cemetery at 80 Main and Wooster Street, south of the city center, has oversized cells constructed to house women jailed wearing hoop skirts. P.T. Barnum was jailed for libel, but continued to run his newspaper from here. It's open weekdays from 8:30-4:30.
Incoming pilots can land at Danbury Municipal Airport, located 3 miles southwest of town. No rental cars are available.
