Wolf Trap is the only national park dedicated to the performing arts. Within the boundaries of the park are 130 acres of rolling hills and woods. The Filene Center is an open-air performing arts pavilion that accommodates 7,000 people, including 3,100 on the lawn, from May to September. Along with the Barns of Wolf Trap, a 352-seat indoor theater in a rebuilt 18th-century barn just outside the park boundary, it hosts performances ranging from opera to dance to rock. The park was authorized on October 15, 1966.

Tips & Hints: Arrive early for best lawn seats. Filene Center gates open about \lA hours before performance. Bring a picnic. Busiest July and Aug., least crowded Jan.

HOW TO GET THERE

Take Exit 67 off I-66 and Exit 12 off Capital Beltway to reach Rte. 267 west (Dulles Toll Rd.). Follow signs to local exits, pay toll, and exit at the Wolf Trap ramp. The Filene Center is on the right. From Rte. 7 west, turn left on Towlston Rd., go 1 mi to Filene Center on left. From West Falls Church Metro station (Orange line), take Wolf Trap Shuttle (tel. 202/637-7000). Closest airports: Dulles (14 mi), Reagan (14 mi).
