LOCATION - Watkins Glen is in the village of Watkins Glen at the south end of Seneca Lake. It's 25 miles west of Ithaca on New York 79.

 

FEATURES - The park's lV^-mile-long gorge has 832 steps climbing 700 feet as it passes 19 waterfalls.

 

ACTIVITIES - The park is open from mid-May through mid-October. Camp in the 303-site campground with a trailer dump. Snacks or breakfast and lunch are available. Go fishing in the lake and swimming in their Olympic-sized pool.

 

Hike up gorge trail to the top of the gorge. Shuttles are available for visitors not wishing to climb. Guided tours are offered at 9:30 and 1:30 from June 20 through Labor Day. Gorge trails are closed from November 10 through mid-May.

 

Additional hiking trails include the North Country National Scenic Trail, Indian Trail heading north above the gorge, and South Rim Trail that joins Finger Lakes Trail next to the picnic area by the campground. We followed South Rim's wooded trail for several miles as it wound along the gorge's south rim, passing Punch Bowl Lake. For additional information and a map on any of these trails, contact the visitor center in Watkins Glen.

 

Attend Timespell, a unique laser interpretive show giving the area's history from 45 million centuries ago to the present. It's given daily in the gorge each evening from May-October at dusk. Visitors climb 83 steps to view the show on towering rock walls. For reservations, call 607-535-4960.

 

To watch auto racing from June-September, Thursday-Sunday, go to Watkins Glen International Race Track located 4 miles southwest of Watkins Glen via New York 414. For a schedule, call 607-535-2481.

 

Go for a cruise on Seneca Lake. A 10-mile trip departs from the foot of Franklin Street on the hour from 10:00-8:00, from May 15-October 15. For reservations, call 607-535-4541 or 607-535-4680.

 

Take a winery tour at Chateau Lafayette Reneau 6 miles north of Watkins Glen on New York 414. The tour takes 15 minutes and is followed by wine tasting. For information, call 607-546-2062.

 

At Seneca Lake, fish from the pier, charter a fishing boat to fish for deep water lake trout, go scuba diving, sailing, or rent a motorboat.

 

Go to Montour Falls to see Chequaga Falls which are almost as high as Niagara Falls. Hector Falls are on the east side of Seneca Lake near Hector.

 

Tour the Corning Museum of Glass in nearby Corning. It's rated as one of top three attractions in New York. Allow at least three hours to tour this very comprehensive glass museum, the hall of science and industry, and the Steuben factory where Steuben glassware is made. It's open seven days a week, 9:00-5:00, except July-August when it's open until 8:00 pm. For information, call 607-974-8271.
