Theodore Roosevelt, apostle of the strenuous life, larger-than-life hero to millions of Americans, and 26th president of the United States, was born in a brownstone house on this site on October 27, 1858. His family lived here until he was 13. The house was demolished in 1916, reconstructed in 1923, and furnished by the Women's Roosevelt Memorial Association with the assistance of the president's widow and sisters. The site was authorized on July 25, 1962.
WHAT TO SEE & DO
Touring house, viewing video and museum exhibits. Facilities: Five rooms furnished and decorated as they were during Roosevelt's occupancy, museum. Museum shop. Programs & Events: Ranger-led programs and tours (throughout the day). Tips & Hints: Use mass transit to get to house. Plan to spend an hour at the site. House tours last 30 minutes and start on the hour; last tour at 4. Busiest in Mar. and Apr., least crowded in July and Jan.

Entrance fee: $3 adults, free ages 17 and under. House open Tues-Sat. 9-5.
HOW TO GET THERE
The reconstructed house is in Manhattan at 28 E. 20th St., between Broadway and Park Ave. S. Use mass transit to get to house because parking is scarce. The 6 subway, which runs along Lexington Ave., stops at the E. 23rd St. station on Park Ave. S. The N and R subway trains stop at the E. 23rd St. station on Broadway. Frequent bus service is provided by routes M-6 and M-7 on Broadway, by route M-l on Park Ave. S, and by route M-23 operating crosstown on 23rd St. Closest airports: JFK and LaGuardia (New York); Newark (New Jersey).
