SMUGGLERS NOTCH STATE PARK
LOCATION - From Stowe, go 10 miles northwest on Vermont 108. FEATURES - Smugglers Notch is a narrow mountain pass with 1,000-foot cliffs rising on either side. The notch was used in the 1800s for illegal trade with Canada when President Thomas Jefferson passed an embargo act forbidding American trade. Later, fugitive slaves crossed through the notch and during the 1920s prohibition, liquor was smuggled from Canada into the U S ' ACTIVITIES - Camp in one of 38 campsites, including 14 lean-tos, from mid-May through Columbus Day. Go hiking to the summit of 4,393-foot Mount Mansfield. Enjoy boating, swimming, fishing, bicycling, or picnicking During the winter, go skiing at Mount Mansfield, Smugglers Notch, or Spruce Peak Ski Area.
State Ski Hostel is adjacent to the park and offers summer lodging for bicyclists and hikers. Reservations are necessary. Call 802-253-4010.
Smugglers Notch Historic Site is 2 miles north of the park on Vermont 108.
Drive up the Stowe toll road to the summit of Mount Mansfield. You can also reach the summit via the Stowe Gondola, located 7.5 miles northwest of Stowe on Vermont 108. For information, call 802-253-7311.
Bicyclists and walkers can enjoy Stowe's 5-mile recreational path that begins in the center of town, following a stream towards Mount Mansfield.
