ROCKY NECK STATE PARK
LOCATION - The park is on Long Island Sound in East Lyme, 3 miles west of Niantic. Take Exit 72 from 1-95.
FEATURES - Rocky Neck State Park is bounded on the west by a tidal river and on the east by a broad salt marsh and features one mile of beach frontage along Long Island Sound.
ACTIVITIES - Take a walk or go saltwater bathing from the white sand beach or follow the area's wooded hiking trails. The trails lead to Baker's Cave, Tony's Nose, and historic sites of the Tannery, Salt Works, and Shipyard.
Come in March and April when high spring tides bring large schools of herring inland to spawn. Go fishing for mackerel, bass, blackfish, and flounder. Go crabbing, scuba diving, birding, or ride the bikeway from the campground to the beach.
Camp in one of 169 campsites, both wooded and open. Attend camper interpretive programs. Concessions and a dump station are available. During the winter, go cross-country skiing.
Visit nearby Harkness Memorial State Park, located 4 miles south of New London on Connecticut 213. The summer estate once belonged to the Edward S. Harkness family and has a 42-room Italian mansion and formal gardens. Enjoy the grounds, have a picnic, and go saltwater fishing. A summer music festival is held July-August.
