QUODDY HEAD STATE PARK

15

LOCATION - The park is south of Lubec, 4 miles off Maine 189.

FEATURES - Quoddy is located at the easternmost point in the U.S. Its prominent rock cliffs rise almost 100 feet above the ocean, where 28-foot tides ebb and flow every six hours.

ACTIVITIES - The park is open daily from the end of May through Labor Day and weekends until the end of October. Enjoy a picnic by West Quoddy Head Lighthouse above the entrance to Passamaquoddy Bay. Constructed in 1808, it's Maine's only red and white candy-striped tower and the easternmost lighthouse in the U.S. Hike the trail along rock cliffs 80 feet above the ocean or follow a boardwalk over a peat bog. Watch for whales offshore during their summer migration season.

West Quoddy Marine Research has a visitor center open all summer with whale exhibits, nature walks, and tours.

The Roosevelt International Bridge connects Lubec to Campobello Island, site of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's summer home. The 34-room "cottage" was occupied from 1905-21 and is open daily 9:00-5:00 from Memorial Day weekend through mid-October. The surrounding park land has over 8 miles of hiking trails. For information, call 506-752-2997.
