LOCATION - Take U.S. 6 to Exit 12, Massachusetts 6A west. The park is 4 miles east of Brewster on Massachusetts 6A.

 

FEATURES - It has 8 inland freshwater "kettle" ponds formed when glaciers retreated from the Cape over 10,000 years ago. Nickerson is one of the largest state parks.

 

ACTIVITIES - Nickerson has 418 campsites located around the ponds and a dump station. Enjoy motor boating and canoeing on Cliff Pond. Swim, picnic on the beach, and canoe on Flax Pond. Also, go fishing for trout and bass stocked year-round at Higgins Pond.

 

Bicyclists have access to 8 miles of the 20-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail passing through the park on its way from Dennis to Eastham, as well as cycling an 8-mile park bicycle trail. ATVs are allowed on park trails. Equestrians have a 2-mile marked trail plus access to roads in the woods which are beside the Cape Cod Trail.

 

Tour the nature center. Bird watchers come to Higgins Pond, a regular stop for many birds on the migratory route. Hikers can explore 3 trails around the park ponds.

 

During the winter, go ice skating and ice fishing on the frozen ponds and cross-country skiing.

 

Brewster is in the center of Cape Cod and has many beautiful nineteenth-century homes built by early sea captains. Tour Cape Cod Museum, 3 miles west of town on Massachusetts 6A. For information, call 508-385-9252.

 

The Cape's oldest windmill, built in 1893, is on U.S. 6, opposite the town hall in Eastham. It's open the last week in June-September 15.

 

Tour Cape Cod's Museum of Natural History and hike the nature trails. It's 1.5 miles west of town on U.S. 6A. For information, call 508-896-3867.

 

Hikers can take an 8-mile walk along the seashore from historic Highland Lighthouse to Race Point.

 

Cape Cod National Seashore has additional hiking trails. Near Marconi Station, the Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail takes you via boardwalk to a well-hidden swamp hollow From the Salt Pond Visitor Center, the Nauset Marsh Trail winds from the meadow to a pine forest.

 

Bicyclists, walkers, and equestrians have access to several trails within the national seashore. A scenic bike ride follows a series of loops south of Race Point Beach. To obtain a "Bikeways on Cape Cod" brochure, contact the Cape Cod National Seashore at 508-349-3785.

 

Visitors can also go surfing, board sailing, or fishing in the ocean.
