LOCATION - Washington's Headquarters are located at 84 Liberty Street in Newburgh. To reach it from the New York Thruway, take Exit 17. From 1-84, take Exit 10 to New York 17K to downtown Newburgh. Then follow signs.

 

Knox's Headquarters are on Forge Hill Road and New York 94 east of Vails Gate. From Newburgh, follow New York 94 for 4.5 miles southwest to Vails Gate.

 

New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site is located one mile north of Vails Gate on Temple Hill Road.

 

FEATURES - Washington's Headquarters, Hasbrouck House, circa 1750, served as his Revolutionary War headquarters when he and his staff stayed here in 1782-83.

 

Knox's Headquarters was built in 1754 and was occupied during the American Revolution by Continental officers, including Generals Henry Knox and Horatio Gates.

 

New Windsor is the site of the Continental army's last camp.

 

ACTIVITIES - Washington's Headquarters State Historic Site's museum includes artifacts of the Continental army. Take a guided house tour from mid-April through October, Wednesday-Saturday from 10:00-5:00, Sunday 1:00-5:00, and by appointment. Visit the 1887 Tower of Victory monument.

 

At Knox's Headquarters, follow paths along the gorge by Silver Stream to see ruins from Ellison's eighteenth-century grist mill. The grounds, including the Jane Colden Native Plant Sanctuary, are open year-round, but the house is only open by appointment Wednesday-Sunday from April 1 through the end of October.

 

At New Windsor, walk through the blacksmith shop and watch living history reenactments and military demonstrations. The site is open Wednesday-Sunday from 10:00-5:00 beginning in late April through late November.

 

Tour historic downtown Newburgh with buildings dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Guided tours leave on Sunday afternoons from the town's visitor center at 87 Liberty Street and by appointment. For information, call 914-565-6880. Incoming pilots can land at Stewart International Airport, located 3 miles northwest of Newburgh. Rental cars are available.
