LOCATION - East Beach State Park's 3-mile-long beach is off East Beach Road in Charles town, in the Ninigret Conservation Area. Charles town Breachway is 5 miles south of Charlestown via U.S. 1 and Charlestown Breachway Road. Burlingame State Park is 5 miles west of Charlestown off U.S. 1.
Misquamicut Beach is 5 miles south of Westerly off Rhode Island 1 A.
ACTIVITIES - At Charlestown Breachway, go camping in one of 75 campsites available for self-contained vehicles only from mid-April through the end of October. Go boating from the ramp in the pond which opens to the ocean. Enjoy excellent saltwater and shell fishing and swimming with lifeguards available.
At East Beach, go camping in one of 20 campsites for self-contained units only from mid-April through the end of October. Enjoy a picnic, saltwater and shell fishing, and swimming in the Atlantic Ocean with lifeguards available. Attend naturalist programs.
Additional fishing is available at Quonochontaug Beach. Watch for some prestigious homes along the central part of the beach.
At Burlingame, camp under the trees in the 755-site campground from mid-April through the end of October along the shore of Watchaug Pond. Go boating from the ramp and fishing in Watchaug Pond. Bring along a picnic to enjoy at one of 126 picnic tables. Take a hike along the trails. Go swimming with seasonal lifeguards on duty Attend summer concerts held by the camp store.
At Misquamicut, go surfing, saltwater fishing, and swimming in Block Island Sound, enjoy a picnic at one of 50 picnic tables, and go swimming from the long, sandy beach. Concessions are available. Ride the carousel. Arrive early to be assured of a parking spot during the summer.
In Westerly, tour the Babcock-Smith House, circa 1732, at 124 Granite Street. For hours, call 401-596-4424.
Children can take a ride aboard the Flying Horse Carousel on Bay Street in Watch Hill. The carousel is America's oldest, used prior to 1879.
The U.S. Coast Guard Light Station, built in 1858, is on Watch Hill, on the east side of the entrance to Little Narragansett Bay. Only exterior viewing is permitted.
Incoming pilots can land at Westerly State Airport off Post Road, 2 miles southeast of town on Rhode Island 1. Rental cars are available.
In Charlestown, visit Ninigret Park off Rhode Island 1A to ride the ten-speed bike course, swim in the spring-fed swimming pool, hike around Drew Memorial Nature Center, and fly model airplanes.
Attend the Charlestown Chamber Seafood Festival held in August.
