LOCATION - Max V. Shaul State Park is in the Schoharie Valley on New York 30 at the base of Toe Path Mountain, 5 miles south of Middleburgh.

 

Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site is on New York 5S at Fort Hunter at the confluence of the Mohawk River and Schoharie Creek. From Thruway Exit 27, Amsterdam, follow signs to New York 5S West. Turn right on Main Street and left on Railroad Street.

 

ACTIVITIES - At Max V. Shaul State Park, camp in one of 32 wooded campsites. Picnic and attend a movie shown every Saturday night from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Special events are offered summer and fall.

 

Schoharie Crossing State Park is open Wednesday-Saturday from mid-May through the last Sunday in October. The park has visible remnants from all three stages of the Erie Canal development. Visitors can go boating, fishing, take guided tours, or enjoy a free mule-drawn boat ride on Saturdays from Memorial Day through mid-October.

 

Take a hike or bike the 3-mile trail along the banks of the present-day Barge Canal or along the original Erie Canal. Guided walking tours are available at 11:00 and 2:00 from Wednesday-Friday.

 

Tour Old Stone Fort Museum complex along the bank of Fox Creek near its confluence with Schoharie on New York 30A, 3 miles south of 1-88, Exit 23. It's open May 1-October 31, but closed Mondays. For information, call 518-295-7192.

 

Tour the 1743 Palantine House, now a living museum listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's open weekends in June, September, and October from 1:00-5:00 and Thursday-Monday in July and August. For information, call 518-295-7585.

 

The Train Car Museum on Depot Lane in Schoharie is open weekends from June-October from 1:00-5:00 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

 

Tour Howe Caverns east of Cobleskill off 1-88. Take Exit 22 to New York east. Go one mile, making a left onto Caverns Road. Explore the caverns both on foot and take an underground cruise on Lake of Venus. For information, call 518-296-8990. During the winter, the caverns' ski center sets 15 kilometers of tracks and has rentals, a warming hut, food, and lodging.

 

Tour Secret Caverns north of Howe Caverns featuring a 100-foot underground waterfall. For information, call 518-296-8558.

 

Bramanville Grist Mill Museum is located one mile before the Caverns and has water-powered mill stones for grinding corn and three floors of milling equipment.
