LAKE ST. CATHERINE STATE PARK
LOCATION - The park is 3 miles south of Poultney on Vermont 30.
FEATURES - Lake St. Catherine State Park is known for its former slate quarrying operations.
ACTIVITIES - Camp in one of the 61 campsites, including 10 lean-tos and a trailer dump station, open from mid-May through Columbus Day. Go swimming and boating from the ramp with rental boats available. Anglers find good bass, perch, northern pike, and record-sized trout fishing in Lake St. Catherine. Hike the nature trail and explore the nature museum. Groceries are available in the park store and snacks at the snack bar.
In Manchester, 25 miles from the park, drive up Equinox Mountain. Tour a restored Georgian Revival mansion and gardens in Hildene on Vermont 7A, home of Abraham Lincoln's descendants until 1975. It's open from mid-May through October. Cross-country ski here in the winter. For information, call 802-362-1788.
In Proctor, 20 miles from the park, tour the Vermont Marble Museum, the world's largest marble museum. It's on Main Street and features the Hall of Presidents with past presidents carved in marble.
