JOHN BOYD THACHER STATE PARK
LOCATION - The park is 4 miles north of New Salem on New York 157 and 15 miles southwest of Albany.
FEATURES - John Boyd Thacher State Park provides a panoramic view of the Hudson-Mohawk valleys, the Adirondacks, and of the Green Mountains.
The Mohawk Indians used the pass over the Helderbergs to go from the Albany trading post to their homes in the Schoharie valley. Part of their path, now called Indian Ladder Trail, is accessible to park visitors. The original ladder was a notched tree trunk laid against the cliff and used to scramble up.
ACTIVITIES - The park is open year-round. Hike the geological trail that is located along the Helderberg Escarpment where you're in one of the richest
fossil-bearing formations in the world. Go swimming in the Olympic-size pool and enjoy a snack.
During the winter, the trail network south of New York 157 is used for crosscountry skiing, snowshoeing, tobogganing, snowmobiling, and downhill skiing without a lift. Heated comfort stations are at Hop Field and Mine Lot picnic areas.
Incoming pilots can land at Albany County Airport 6 miles northwest of Albany. Rental cars are available.
