LOCATION - Holyoke Heritage State Park is between Dwight and Appleton streets behind City Hall in Holyoke. Follow Massachusetts Turnpike to Exit 4. Then take Massachusetts 91 north to Massachusetts 202 north, Exit 16. Turn right at the seventh traffic light.

 

Holyoke Range State Park is on Massachusetts 116, west of Amherst. Follow Massachusetts Pike to Exit 4. Then take Massachusetts 91 north to the second Northampton Exit. Follow Massachusetts 9 east to Massachusetts 47, then go south to Bay Road and Massachusetts 116 south.

 

FEATURES - The park showcases the lives of nineteenth-century mill workers.

 

ACTIVITIES - Holyoke Heritage State Park is open from mid-May through late November. Tour the visitor center resembling a railroad roundhouse and watch "Holyoke Is Its People." The visitor center offers performances, films, ethnic festivals, concerts, historic home tours, children's programs, and an annual Celebrate Holyoke weekend. For schedules, call 413-534-0909.

 

Take a ranger-led walking tour of Holyoke's nineteenth-century canals and mills. Enjoy an hour-long narrated train ride on a 1920s vintage railroad on Saturday and Sunday from mid-May through mid-October.

 

Take a self-guided or a weekend guided tour during the spring and summer to see Skinner Silk Mills, Whiting Paper Company, and workers' housing. For reservations, call 413-534-1723.

 

Visit the Volleyball Hall of Fame to see photographs and exhibits tracing the sport's history. For information, call 413-536-0926. Bring along a picnic to enjoy in the adjacent park.

 

To go hiking, go to Holyoke Range State Park where a section of the 117-mile-long Metacomet-Monadnock Trail passes en route from Connecticut to New Hampshire. Have a picnic, attend visitor programs, go fishing, and tour the visitor center. During the winter, go cross-country skiing on 4 miles of trails.
