LOCATION - Take Massachusetts 128 to Gloucester. At the traffic circle, follow Massachusetts 127 to Rockport, watching for the park sign. Turn left on Gott Avenue.

 

ACTIVITIES - The park is open for day-use only. Park headquarters is located in the World War II Tower building. Pick up a trail guide, including one for the Babson Farm Quarry. Guided tours are given Saturday mornings at 10:00 and 11:30 from May-October.

 

Go hiking on a section of the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail, a 117-mile trail that passes through the park en route from Connecticut to New Hampshire. Have a picnic, attend visitor programs, go fishing and hiking, and tour the visitor center. During the winter, go cross-country skiing on 4 miles of trails.

 

Tour Paper House off Massachusetts 127 at Pigeon Cove. It's built completely out of newspapers, including all the furniture. The house is open daily 10:00-5:00 from July-August.

 

In Amherst, attend the annual Teddy Bear Rally held each August on Amherst Common. Emily Dickinson's home is at 280 Main Street. Seasonal tours are offered. For details, call 413-542-8161. To see the world's largest mastadon, tour Pratt Museum of Natural History at Amherst College.

 

The Sewall-Scripture House at 40 King has early American and Victorian rooms and costumes, paintings, and photographs. Call 508-546-9533 for hours.

 

Attend concerts performed by Rockport Chamber Music Festival in June. International dory races and the New Fish Festival are held in Gloucester in mid-June. The Gloucester Waterfront Festival is near the end of August, and Gloucester's Schooner Festival is over Labor Day weekend. Take a Cape Ann Island cruise, go lobster trap hauling, or enjoy a whale watching cruise from Rose's Wharf in Gloucester.
