GIFFORD WOODS STATE PARK
LOCATION - The park is 2 miles west of Sherburne Center on U.S. 4 and another Vi mile north on Vermont 100.
ACTIVITIES - Camp in one of 48 campsites, including 21 lean-tos and a disposal station, from mid-May through Columbus Day. Go fishing for bass and trout in Kent Pond, Colton Pond, White River, or in one of the numerous ponds located along Vermont 100. Tour the nature center and attend naturalist talks.
Enjoy hiking through the woods on Kent Brook Trail. The Appalachian Trail runs through the park and after 1.5 miles joins Long Trail. Because of the hardwoods, Gifford Woods is a popular spot for "leaf peepers" to visit when the trees assume their colorful fall foliage.
Across from the campground is a 7-acre stand of virgin hardwood, one of the few left in the state.
Ride up Killington Gondola to the summit of 4,241-foot Killington Peak. It's 5 miles east of the park on Vermont 4. For information call 802-422-3333. Ride the Pico Alpine Slide in the Pico Peak Ski Area.
