Fort Stanwix National Monument

In central New York, in Rome

The British built a fort at the site in 1758 to protect the Oneida Carry portage that linked the waterway between the Atlantic Ocean and Great Lakes. Fort Stanwix was rebuilt by Americans in 1776 and then, in 1777, attacked by the British from August 3 to 23 until British troops retreated to Canada. The fort has been almost entirely reconstructed to its 1777 appearance. The site was authorized in 1935. It became a National Historic Landmark in 1963 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
