FORT SHANTOK STATE PARK
STODDARD HILL STATE PARK
LOCATION - Fort Shantok is located on the west bank of the Thames River, 4 miles south of Norwich off Connecticut 32.
Stoddard Hill State Park is 5 miles south of Norwich on Connecticut 12.
FEATURES - Fort Shantok is located on the site of a seventeenth-century fortified Mohegan village and burial ground.
ACTIVITIES - Today you can still see remnants of the fort's stone foundation. Interpretive signs on the fort site point out important events in the area. Hike short trails around the grounds, including one around the cemetery. Enjoy a picnic and go freshwater fishing in Tantaquidgeon Pond or in the Thames River for bass and bluefish.
Indian artifacts from the area are at the Tantaquidgeon Indian Museum on Connecticut 32 in Montville. The museum is open summers only.
Stroll through Mohegan Park and Memorial Rose Garden, located east of Norwich off Connecticut 32 on Mohegan Road. The roses are in full bloom from late June through mid-July.
John Baldwin's house, circa 1660, is at 210 West Town Street in Norwich. From 1-395, take Exit 82, or from Connecticut 2, take Exit 27. Take a guided tour to see demonstrations of colonial skills. For times, call 203-889-5990.
