FORT POINT STATE PARK
LOCATION - The park is off U.S. 1, east of Stockton Springs on the tip of a peninsula in Penobscot Bay.
FEATURES - The park is adjacent to historic Fort Pownall, constructed in 1759. To prevent its being taken intact by American patriots, the British burned the fort twice, so that today only earthworks remain. The fort has displays, a lighthouse, and picnicking spots.
Square-towered Fort Point Lighthouse, a state historic site, overlooks Penobscot Bay. Follow Squaw Point Road next to Fort Point State Park to reach the lighthouse.
ACTIVITIES - Come to tour the fort, go fishing from the 200-foot pier, and enjoy a picnic.
