FORT KNOX STATE PARK
LOCATION - The park is on Maine 174 across the Penobscot River from the town of Bucksport and one mile north from U.S. 1, west of the Waldo-Hancock Bridge.
FEATURES - The fort, high on a bluff overlooking the river, was built in the 1840s with granite from Mount Waldo, in anticipation of war with Great Britain. It was manned during the Civil War and Spanish-American War.
ACTIVITIES - Bring along a flashlight to walk through its subterranean network of tunnels and fortifications. Either take a self-guided tour or a scheduled guided tour and attend interpretive programs.
