FORT EDGECOMB STATE PARK
LOCATION - The park overlooks the Sheepscot River on the south end of Davis Island. Take U.S. 1 south to the Edgecomb end of Wiscasset Bridge and turn right.
FEATURES - The park features a timbered fort constructed in 1809 to protect Wiscasset, once the most important shipping center north of Boston.
ACTIVITIES - Enjoy a picnic and tour the restored fort and octagonal blockhouse open May 30 through Labor Day. Attend an interpretive program and bring along a picnic. Watch for harbor seals along the Sheepscot River.
In nearby Boothbay visit the historic Railway Village on Maine 27 from mid-June through mid-October. Take a ride on the steam train and see an antique auto and truck exhibit. The village has 28 display buildings, including the 1847 Town Hall and 1911 vintage Railroad Station. For details, call 207-633-4727.
Visit the Kenneth E. Stoddard Shell Museum on Hardwick Road, Boothbay, to see one of the world's largest private collections. It's housed inside the covered bridge behind Dolphin Mini-Golf. For information, call 207-633-4828.
Tour the Musical Wonder House at 18 High Street to see antique musical instruments. Guided tours are offered daily 10:00-5:00 from Memorial Day through Labor Day and by appointment only after Labor Day through October 15. To make a reservation to hear a summer concert, call 207-882-7163.
Go Whitewater rafting on the Kennebec, Dead, and Penobscot rivers from April-October. For details, call 1-800-766-7238. Go on an ocean kayak tour or
rent a mountain bike from the Tidal Transit Company in the Granary Way Building near the footbridge. For details, call 207-633-7140.
Additional boating options are available on the New Meadows River, Sheepscot River, Merrymeeting Bay, or in Casco Bay. Boat rentals are available in Boothbay Harbor. Boat cruises leave from Shore Road in Edgecomb. For information, call 702-882-7909.
From Boothbay Harbor, you can go out on an excursion boat, ride aboard a working lobster boat and assist in harvesting, or go out in a windjammer. Rent a kayak, go saltwater fishing, and go canoeing or sailboarding. Stay overnight on your own private yacht, a floating В & В. Attend the annual four-day Windjammer Days festival in late June or Friendship Sloop Days in late July.
Several lighthouses in the Boothbay Harbor region date back to the 1800s. Visit Owls Head Transportation Museum where many special events are held throughout the summer months. For schedules, call 207-594-4418.
Visit Dodge Point Preserve State Park on River Road near Newcastle on the Damariscotta River. The park features 500 acres of forest, deep-water access, three beaches, and hiking trails.
Arriving pilots can land at Wiscasset Airport, 3 miles southwest of Wiscasset, where you can take a scenic coastal plane ride. Rental cars are available.
