FORT DELAWARE STATE PARK
LOCATION - The park is on Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River and is only accessible by boat. Boats depart weekends from 11:00-6:00 every 30 minutes from the foot of Clinton Street in Delaware City, north of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.
ACTIVITIES - Fort Delaware, used as a federal prison during the Civil War, is open weekends and holidays from the last weekend in April through the last weekend in September from 11:00-6:00. In July and August, the fort is open Wednesday-Friday from 11:00-4:00. Tour the museum to see Civil War memorabilia and watch an audio-visual presentation. Attend summer performances on the parade grounds. Refreshments are available.
Take a nature walk north of the fort and watch for egrets, herons, and ibis in the island's nature preserve, the largest wading bird nesting area found on the East Coast. Go fishing or take a chartered cruise on the Delafort passenger ferry on the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal from April-October. For information, call 302-834-7941.
Polish Day is celebrated at the fort on the second Sunday in June.
In Port Penn, visit the Port Penn Interpretive Center at Market and Liberty, 5 miles south of Fort Delaware. It's open May-September, Wednesday-Friday from 9:00-5:00.
