DIXVILLE NOTCH STATE PARK
LOCATION - The park is east of Dixville on New Hampshire 26. FEATURES - The park, located in the White Mountains, features a scenic gorge and waterfalls and is the state's most northern, smallest mountain notch. Lake Gloriette, the Cathedral Spires, Cascades, and Table Rock are located here.
ACTIVITIES - Follow hiking trails to Table Rock. One begins in the Notch and is a steep, difficult trail. Another trail begins on New Hampshire 26 near the Balsams/Wilderness Ski Area's entrance road. Both involve approximately 2.5 miles round trip.
Hike 3-mile Sanguinari Ridge Trail beginning at Flume Brook picnic area. It stays on the steep north wall of Dixville Notch where you get spectacular views of Lake Gloriette and the Balsams Hotel. Sanguinari Ridge gets its name from the rocks that appear blood red at sunset. Drive the scenic auto road and enjoy a picnic. For additional hiking, pick up a park trail map.
The Balsams Wilderness Ski Area offers winter activities. The cross-country area has 73 kilometers of groomed trails and 27 kilometers of back-country ski trails to explore. Rentals are available at the cross-country center and at the alpine ski center. For snow conditions, call 603-255-3951. Snowmobilers have access to many trails within the wilderness area that connect with a 110-mile system maintained by the state. Pick up a trail map from the ski area. The wilderness also offers miles of private roads and trails for bicycling. Flyfish for trout in Lake Gloriette.
