DELAWARE AND RARITAN CANAL STATE PARK
LOCATION - The Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park is on the Delaware River, 7 miles west of New Brunswick on New Jersey 514. The Bull's Island section of the park is 3 miles north of Stockton on New Jersey 29.
FEATURES - Begun in 1834, the original 66-mile-long canal has expanded into an 80-mile-long park stretching from Milford through Trenton to New Brunswick. The site of original outlet locks are still visible beside the Raritan River in New Brunswick.
Along the canal you'll see nineteenth-century bridges, locktender houses, cobblestone spillways, and hand-built culverts. The canal and its structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and its trail system is designated as a National Recreation Trail.
ACTIVITIES - Camp in the 75-site campground in the Bull's Island Natural Area section with a trailer dump station. Fish the canal for catfish, eel, bass, and stocked trout and in the river for catfish, bass, pickerel, and carp. Hike the nature trail beginning near the park office, paralleling the canal to the southernmost point of the island.
Canoes, kayaks, rowboats, and electric-powered boats may be used on both the river and canal, while power boats are permitted only on the Delaware River. Access to the river is available from Kingwood, Bryam, Bull's Island, Lambertville, and Fireman's Eddy.
The canal section has picnicking, a boat launch for electric motorboats, rentals, fishing, and canoe trails. The historic towpath along the main canal from Bakers Basin Road to New Brunswick has a 10-mile section utilized by hikers, joggers, equestrians, and bicyclists. Access is from Weston Canal Road. The path connects Washington Crossing State Park.
During the winter, go cross-country skiing and ice fishing.
