CUNNINGHAM FALLS STATE PARK
LOCATION - Cunningham Falls State Park's Houck Area is 3 miles west of Thurmont on Maryland 77. Cunningham Falls Manor Area is south of the state park.
ACTIVITIES - From the Falls' Houck Area, go swimming, launch your boat from the boat launch, or rent a canoe and go flatwater canoeing. Camp in one of 148 campsites with a dumping station. Attend a campfire program in the evening. Concessions and a camp store are available.
Go freshwater fishing, take a nature walk along the self-guided trail, or hike along a section of the Appalachian Trail. The area is especially colorful in the spring when the wildflowers bloom. During the winter, go cross-country skiing and sledding.
In the Manor area, camp in one of 31 campsites and go fishing.
Catoctin Mountain Park, administered by the National Park Service, adjoins Cunningham Falls State Park. Here you can go hiking along 25 miles of trails, camping in Owens Creek Campground with 50 campsites, trout fishing in the stream, and horseback riding along 12 miles of equestrian trails. Go rock climbing and watch a demonstration of whiskey-making at Blue Blazes Still, operated by the National Park Service on weekends from Memorial Day through October. Loy's Station Bridge, circa 1850-60, is on Old Frederick Road off U.S. 77, 3 miles from Thurmont. This 90-foot covered bridge spans Owen's Creek. Roddy Road Covered Bridge, circa 1856, is a 40-foot span over Owen's Creek.

For admission information, call 301-663-3833. Rose Hill Manor Children's Museum at 1611 North Market was constructed in 1790 and has been restored to depict life in the nineteenth century. To do additional hiking, drive to Sugarloaf Mountain, approximately 13 miles south of town on 1-270 and Maryland 109. Take the Comas Exit.
Incoming pilots can land at Frederick Municipal Airport, located east of town. Rental cars are available.
