CONNECTICUT

The early Indians referred to Connecticut as Quinnehtukut or "beside the long tidal river." The Connecticut River begins its journey in northeastern Vermont and winds its way through Connecticut, ending in Long Island Sound, making it the largest river in the U.S. without a port located at its mouth. Today the river serves as a major center for marine activity. Two other major rivers in the state are the Thames and Housatonic. The state's largest lake is Lake Candlewood.

The southernmost section of the Berkshires and Taconic mountains extends into the northwestern part of Connecticut. Six-tenths of the state is forest, primarily 60- to 100-year-old hardwoods, providing glorious color in the fall. Much of the forested land is the site of 91 state parks and 30 state forests.

Visitors go to Long Island Sound to enjoy boating and saltwater fishing for bluefish, sea bass, and flounder. During the winter, skiers congregate at Mohawk Mountain State Park near Cornwall. Snowmobilers enjoy their sport in the Litchfield Hills.

Mystic Seaport, where you can see exhibits from the region's early whaling days, is the state's biggest attraction. Groton is often referred to as the "Submarine Capital of the World" and is now home to the submarine USS Nautilus.

Much history occurred here, including the adoption of the U.S. Constitution and key events in the Industrial Revolution. Nathan Hale, Benedict Arnold, and Israel Putnam, who told his troops at Bunker Hill not to fire until you see the "whites of their eyes," were all born here.
