COBSCOOK BAY STATE PARK

5

LOCATION - The park is 6 miles south of Dennysville on U.S. 1 and is surrounded on three sides by Cobscook Bay.

FEATURES - Cobscook is an Indian name meaning "boiling tide." Here you can observe the highest tides in the U.S. with 24-foot tidal currents.

ACTIVITIES - Many of the 107 campsites with a trailer dump station are located beside the water. The campground is open from mid-May through mid-October.

Visitors can go deep sea fishing, sailing, boating, kayaking, scuba diving, golfing, hiking, and bicycle riding around the island. During the winter, crosscountry ski on unplowed park roads and along the shore of Cobscook Bay. Adjacent Moosehead National Wildlife Refuge also has cross-country skiing along the refuge roads. Call 207-454-3521 for information.

Witness the power of the Old Sow, the second largest whirlpool in the world. It's visible from Dog Island, Harris Cove, and Deer Island or from on board a commercial boat.

Franklin D. Roosevelt International Park contains Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt's summer cottage. It's on Campobello Island in New Brunswick. Stop by Pleasant Point Indian Reservation of the Passamaquoddy Tribe to see their arts and crafts. Visit Reversing Falls Park, located northeast of the park.

Watch for bald eagles and osprey in Edmund's Unit of Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, bordering the park on the west. Dig for clams in the flats and kayak the bay and its channels. Because of high tides, kayakers should be experienced and prepared for surf running like a river.

Fish for mackerel in the Atlantic. Drive 18 miles southeast to the cliffs at Quoddy Head, the easternmost point on the mainland. Observe the sea creatures at Quoddy Tides Aquarium.

Stroll along the red granite seawall in Eastport's historic district where many buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Canoe the Dennys and Pennamaquam rivers or hike the Shackford Head State Trail.

Incoming pilots can land at Eastport Municipal Airport. No fuel is available and some local motels provide courtesy ground transportation.
