Cedar Creek & Belle Grove National Historical Park
In the northern Shenandoah Valley, near Middletown and Strasburg
This park, together with several on-site nonprofit preservation organizations, strives to commemorate the history of the land and structures within its boundaries. Most of the property within the park is closed to visitors, except two partner sites: Belle Grove Plantation, an 18th-cen-tury farm and limestone farmhouse, and the Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation Visitor Center, a memorial to the 1864 Civil War battle. The national historical park encompasses approximately 3,500 acres within Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District. The park was established on December 19, 2002.
WHAT TO SEE & DO
Touring plantation farm and house, touring battlefield and visitor center. Facilities: Belle Grove Plantation and Cedar Creek Foundation Visitor Center. Programs & Events: Guided and self-guided tours. Battle reenactments at Cedar Creek ($15; Oct.). Tips & Hints: There are no park service facilities in the park. Belle Grove Plantation Manor House daily tours: $6-$8 adults, $3 ages 6-12, free ages 5 and under. Cedar Creek Battlefield Visitor Center entrance fee and film: $2. Guided tours available by appointment. Belle Grove Plantation open Apr.-Oct., Mon.-Sat. 10-3:15, Sun. 1-4:15. Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation Visitor Center open Apr.-Oct., Mon.-Sat. 10-4, Sun. 1—4; Nov.-Mar, by appointment.
HOW TO GET THERE
At the junction of 1-81 and 1-66 in the northern Shenandoah Valley, exit onto the historic Valley Turnpike (U.S. 11), which runs through the park. Closest airports: Dulles, Reagan, and Baltimore, all within 90 mi.
