LOCATION - Cape May Point is located on historic Cape May Peninsula at the southern tip of New Jersey, approximately 2 miles west of Cape May. The park may be reached from the Garden State Parkway and U.S. 9.

 

FEATURES - Historic 157-foot Cape May Point Lighthouse was constructed in 1859. It's still active and is visible up to 24 miles at sea.

 

ACTIVITIES - Climb the spiral staircase to the watchroom to enjoy a panoramic view of the ocean. Tours are offered daily spring through fall and on a reduced schedule the remainder of the year. Tour the visitor center and museum. Enjoy a picnic and go surf fishing for bluefish, flounder, and striped bass.

 

The park is located along the Atlantic flyway and is a popular site for bird watching. A raised platform provides some good views of migrating hawks in September and October. The park's natural area has 3 miles of trails and boardwalks.

 

Take a trolley tour of Cape May's historic district. Tours begin from the station on Beach Drive at Gurney Street during the summer, from the Washington Street Mall information booth during the spring and fall, and from Physick Estate throughout the winter.

 

Cape May County Historical Society is housed in eighteenth-century John Homes's house with 300 years of local history plus an extensive genealogical library. For information, call 609-465-3535.

 

Stop by the Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center at 1286 Wilson Drive in Cape May from mid-April through late November for whale watching information. Call them at 609-898-0055.

 

Join a guided walking tour or carriage tour beginning from the Washington Mall information booth or pick up a map to take a self-guided tour. Purchase a ticket for a special evening house tour at the Physick Estate.

 

Attend summer afternoon band concerts in Cape May County Park. Tour Learnings Run's 27 gardens and Colonial farm, located 5 miles north of town off New Jersey 9, Exit 13 of the Garden State Parkway.

 

Ride the ferry from Cape May to Lewes, Delaware. Lewes is Delaware's oldest settlement and has many restored historic buildings and homes. For information, call 609-886-9699. For ferry schedule times, call 1-800-64FERRY.

 

Annual events include a tulip festival in the Convention Hall the last weekend in April and the Cape May Musical Festival in the Christian Admiral Recital Hall during the last weekend in May through early July. A Victorian Fair is held the third weekend in June at the Emlen Physick Estate.

 

For additional hiking, camping, fishing, and boating, go to Belleplain State Forest. It's easily accessible from the Garden State Parkway southbound, Exit 17, onto New Jersey 550, or northbound on the parkway from Exit 13 onto New Jersey 9 and 550, Sea Isle Boulevard. Canoe rentals are available at Lake Nummy from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

 

Campers have 3 campgrounds with 188 campsites. The main 6.5-mile hiking trail connects Lake Nummy and East Creek Pond recreational areas. Additional miles of forest roads are used by bicyclists and equestrians. For information, call 609-861-2404.
