CAMDEN HILLS STATE PARK
LOCATION - The park is 2 miles north of Camden on U.S. 1 on the shore of Penobscot Bay in the Megunticook Mountains.
FEATURES - Rockland's lighthouse and 7/8-mile native granite breakwater were constructed in 1888.
ACTIVITIES - A 14-mile paved road leads to the summit of 900-foot Mount Battie, providing panoramic views of Penobscot Bay and Camden Harbor. The park has 30 miles of hiking trails. Hike up Mount Battie or 1,385-foot Mount Megunticook, highest of the Camden Hills. Hike to Maiden Cliff, a rock outcrop rising 800 feet above Megunticook Lake. Ridge Trail's 2.5-mile-long hike provides great views of the ocean, mountains, and lake.
Visitors also have access to both salt- and freshwater beaches. Enjoy a picnic and go camping in one of the 112 campsites with a dump station from May 15-October 15.
During the winter, go snowmobiling along 10 miles of trails. The park has no groomed cross-country ski trails.
Curtis Island Lighthouse is at the end of a mile-long breakwater where you can walk in calm weather. Take a schooner boat ride given daily or for a week-long cruise from Rockland Harbor. State-run ferries make regular runs from the Rockland Public Landing to two islands in Penobscot Bay.
In Rockland, visit Shore Village Museum at 104 Limerock Street to see the largest collection of lighthouse and Coast Guard artifacts in the U.S. It's open daily from June-October. For information, call 207-594-4950.
Rockland's main street is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Sea captains and famous celebrities have shopped here for over 150 years. Pick up a map from the Chamber of Commerce, located on the boat landing on Commercial Street, to take a self-guided tour.

Watch the annual Great Schooner Race in Rockland over July 4th. For accompanying activities, contact the Chamber of Commerce at 207-596-0376. Rockland is known as the Lobster Capital of the World and holds a Maine Lobster Festival in early August featuring a parade, road races, a lobster eating contest, and a lobster crate race. Many come to Camden to go sailing, windsurfing, and water skiing both on the ocean and on nearby lakes. Windjammer cruises are available during the summer from Sharp's Wharf next to Camden Town landing.
Attend performances by the Camden Shakespeare Company in July. For information, call 207-236-7595. Attend the fall festival in early October and Christmas by the Sea in early December.
Incoming pilots can land at County Regional Airport in Rockland, 12 miles south of Camden. Car rentals are available.
