BORDERLAND STATE PARK
LOCATION - Take 1-495 to Exit 10. Go north on Massachusetts 123 towards Easton and merge with Massachusetts 106 heading east. One-half mile from here, watch for the park sign onto Poquanticut Avenue. At the next intersection, go left onto Massapoag Avenue and continue another 2 miles to the park.
FEATURES - This country estate, circa 1910, was originally owned by Oakes Ames, a Harvard botanist, and his artist wife, Blanche.
The park is considered to be a "borderland" because it lies between gradually rising hills to the north and flatter land to the south.
Borderland's six ponds have fragrant water lilies and are home to freshwater fish, including perch and bass. The glaciated cliffs and outcroppings on the north contain several glacial erratics, granite boulders torn loose from the bedrock and carried here by the glaciers.
ACTIVITIES - Go canoeing, sailing, and fishing in the ponds. Hike and horseback ride the woodland trails. During spring, summer, and fall, the family's home is open for guided tours Sunday afternoons. During the winter, enjoy cross-country skiing, ice skating, and sledding.
